    St. Petersburg Times : Valpak too valuable for publisher Cox to keep

    "All advertising businesses have been affected, but we're seeing a tremendous increase in consumer interest in coupons," said Deanna Willsey, Valpak's director of communications.

    Bobby Adkins, who owns four Valpak franchises, said his business is up this year. "People are becoming more frugal," said Adkins, who lives in Austin, Texas. He said the coupons they get in Valpak envelopes offer consumers justification to spend money because they're saving at the same time.

    Nationally, coupon redemptions stabilized last year after 14 years of decline and have continued to hold their own this year. Direct mailers like Valpak account for about 2.2 percent of coupon distribution.

    "There's a lot of research right now that shows that in fact usage of coupons is steadily on the increase," said Valpak spokesperson Deanna Willsey. "And it's really no surprise given on how all the consumers are really tightening up on budgets and looking to make their dollar go further."

    Willsey said it's not just grocery coupons. People can save on anything ranging from restaurants to home improvement.

    "It really makes you feel better about having that little thing you'd like to have extra," Willsey said.

    According to Valpak, 51 percent of the people redeeming coupons have households that make $50,000 or more.

    DM News : Retailers Aim Low with Price Messaging

    In its co-op mailings with partner Val­pak, Wal-Mart has increased its marketing efforts and has been focusing its messag­ing on price. “Consumers are trying to find ways to save money and stretch their dollars, and discount retailers are responding by pushing low prices,” said Amy King, VP of business intelligence and marketing research at Valpak. “We have seen Wal-Mart specifically pushing price in its marketing message.”

    Sears and Kmart, other Valpak clients, are also tugging at tightened purse strings with coupon offers.

    “For the first time in 16 years, coupon redemption is up,” King noted, despite lagging returns on other print material.
